We set out from Weld
Harbour and made our way to the Tasmania islands where we anchored for the
night. The next morning the ice plug that was blocking our way had dispersed
and we set out into Larsen Sound on a calm and clear morning. The wind steadily
picked up throughout the day and kept a good shorelead open. By the time we
reached the beginning of the Bellot Strait, we were beating into 50 knt winds
and freezing spray. After Dragging anchor 5 times, bailing out the flooded
chain locker and repairing the windlass, we finally got the pick to hold and
went below. Dangerously cold and exhausted, we had to chip the ice from our
jackets. Eric from Vagabond later told us that the wind chill would have been
around -40 C in those winds.
